Engagement Ring Design Questions
Which ring setting is best for everyday wear?
The best setting is one that suits how the ring will genuinely be worn. A lower basket or bezel setting offers greater protection and is less likely to catch, while a traditional claw setting gives the diamond a lighter, more open appearance. For an active or hands-on lifestyle, we would favour security and sensible proportions over unnecessary delicacy.
Are pavé and halo settings suitable for daily wear?
Yes, provided they are well made and treated with appropriate care. Their smaller diamonds are held by finer areas of metal, so they will always require more attention than a plain solitaire or bezel setting. We recommend removing any diamond-set ring for exercise, heavy lifting or manual work and having the setting inspected periodically.
Should I choose a high- or low-set engagement ring?
A higher setting gives the diamond greater presence and often allows a straight wedding band to sit neatly alongside it. A lower setting feels more discreet, is less prone to catching and can be more comfortable for everyday wear. Neither is inherently better—the right choice depends on lifestyle, preferred appearance and how you would like the ring to pair with a future wedding band.
Which setting will make a diamond appear larger?
A halo can create the strongest impression of additional size by surrounding the centre diamond with smaller stones. Pavé shoulders can also increase the overall brilliance, while a fine band or carefully proportioned claws allow the centre stone to appear more prominent. The aim should be balance rather than simply making the diamond look as large as possible.
Will a wedding band sit flush with my engagement ring?
This depends on the width and position of the engagement ring’s setting. Many of our designs can sit comfortably beside a classic straight band, although some lower or more sculptural settings naturally leave a small space. Where a seamless fit is preferred, we can create a shaped-to-fit wedding band around the engagement ring.
How do I choose a design that will not feel dated?
Choose the details you genuinely love rather than designing around a passing trend. Solitaires, trilogy rings and restrained halo designs have endured because their proportions can be refined without losing their character. A personal detail can make a classic design distinctive, but the finished ring should still feel true to the person who will wear it. Current demand is increasingly centred on individuality rather than following one dominant style.
