Cut is the most important of the 4Cs. It determines how beautifully a diamond reflects light, affecting its brilliance, fire and sparkle.

Diamond Cut & Light Performance

A diamond’s proportions determine how effectively light travels through the stone and returns to the eye. A well-proportioned cut maximises brilliance, fire and sparkle, while proportions that are too deep or too shallow allow light to escape.

Excellent

Precisely proportioned to return the maximum amount of light through the top of the diamond. This creates exceptional brilliance, fire and sparkle, giving the stone its bright, lively appearance.

Good

Well proportioned with strong overall brilliance and sparkle, although some light escapes rather than returning through the top of the diamond. The difference can be subtle, but becomes more apparent alongside an Excellent cut.

Deep

When a diamond is cut too deep, light travels at less effective angles and escapes through the sides or base of the stone. This reduces light return and can make the diamond appear darker and smaller than its carat weight suggests.

Shallow

When a diamond is cut too shallow, light passes through the stone and escapes through the base instead of reflecting back towards the eye. The result is reduced brilliance, contrast and sparkle, often giving the diamond a flatter appearance.
