Why can’t I see the hallmark on my jewellery?
Hallmarks are intentionally small and are often positioned discreetly so they do not detract from the design. A jeweller’s loupe or magnification may be required to see them clearly.
What does 750 mean?
750 is the millesimal fineness used for 18ct gold: 750 parts pure gold per thousand.
Does every piece of jewellery require a hallmark?
No. Statutory exemption weights apply, and certain other exemptions exist under the Hallmarking Act.
What is the leopard’s head?
The leopard’s head is the traditional assay office mark of the London Assay Office.
Is the EBL stamp itself a hallmark?
EBL is the sponsor’s mark identifying Emily Burlington as the registered sponsor. A complete UK hallmark also includes the fineness mark and assay office mark.
Can a hallmark wear away?
Over many years of wear, polishing or refinishing can soften a hallmark. Its visibility can therefore vary depending on the age and condition of the piece.
